Educate Yourself in the Great Bear Rainforest

Experiential Education on a Whole Other Level

Welcome to Prince Rupert School District’s International Student Program

Prince Rupert, located on Ts’msyan territory, is nestled in the largest continguous temperate rainforest in the world. Our school district has unprecedented access to some of the most unique ecosystems in the planet and is home to the Spirit Bear, Grizzly Bear and Costal Wolf. We have a vibrant indigenous culture and some of the oldest archaeological sites in existence. Our district’s international program will enthrall and inspire you. We combine a world class education with a world class experience offered no where else in the world.

What is “Rupert” Like?

Prince Rupert is Canada’s 3rd largest port city and the fastest growing port in Canada. While the Ts’msyan have been here since time immemorial, Prince Rupert was incorporated in 1910 and is commonly referred to as “Rupert” by the locals. Rupert has a vibrant tourism, fishing, arts, cruise ship and culture scene in addition to its port industry.

Getting Here

Prince Rupert is the last major coastal city in BC before Alaska. A flight from Vancouver is ~750km or ~ 2 hours. Driving is double that at ~1500km or ~ 18 hours. The ferry to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island’s northern tip is ~18 hours.

Urban / Rural

Prince Rupert is defined as Urban/Rural. We are an isolated community of about 12,000 people; however, due to geography, Rupert has higher population density than similar cities like Terrace, BC. This creates an urban feel.

Weather

We are not going to lie. It rains here. A lot. After all, this is a rainforest. Yet this rain makes the sun much more enjoyable. Being by the Pacific Ocean, our temperature is moderate with highs of about 24°C and lows of about -5°C yearly.

Hiking

Discover the stunning trails that weave through our lush rainforest and coastal landscapes. From easy walks to challenging hikes, there’s something for everyone. Enjoy breathtaking views, diverse wildlife, and the tranquil beauty.

Skiing / Snowboarding

Shames Mountain in Terrace, just a short drive away, offers epic runs and easy to access back country. For more adventure, Hudson Mountain in Smithers, BC gives a big moutain experience. All the epic slopes come packed with powder.

Kayaking & Fishing

Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Ts’msyan territory with kayaking and fishing. Paddle through serene waters, explore hidden coves, and catch a variety of fish. Through our program you will connect with nature.

Connection to the Land and Indigenous Culture

Prince Rupert School District is known for its collaboration with,  and integration of, local indigenous culture and identity. You will not only have unprecedented access to a place-based and land-based educational model, students will connect with local indigenous elders and knowledge keepers while on school based adventures.
